THE IMPACT OF COVID 19 IN DIPLOMACY

DIPLOMATIC INTERNATIONAL DAY (1st Edition)

Diplomatic representatives and international organizations convened to assess how the COVID‑19 pandemic has reshaped diplomatic practice. The crisis accelerated the digitalization of engagement—virtual summits, online negotiations, and remote consular services became the norm—and elevated health security alongside trade and defense as core foreign‑policy priorities. Embassies swiftly organized repatriation missions, negotiated emergency health corridors, and procured medical supplies, while serving as crucial information hubs for host‑country coordination and citizen guidance. This collective response underscored a “whole‑of‑government” approach, integrating health, consular, trade, and public affairs to maintain continuity of services under travel restrictions and lockdowns. Participants noted that COVID‑19 both strained and strengthened bilateral and multilateral ties: travel curbs impeded in‑person diplomacy yet catalyzed new scientific, technical, and health‑diplomacy coalitions beyond traditional security alliances. Vaccine diplomacy and emergency aid became prominent tools of soft power, enabling states to reinforce partnerships and project solidarity. Looking ahead, attendees were invited to propose further themes—such as cultural diplomacy’s adaptation, the future of multilateral health governanceion or non‑state actors’ roles—to enrich subsequent editions of Diplomatic International Day and deepen our understanding of the evolving interplay between global health and diplomacy.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT DIPLOMATIC ACTIONS

DIPLOMATIC INTERNATIONAL DAY (2nd Edition)

Organized under the banner “Diplomatic International Day – Sustainable Development Diplomatic Actions,” this unique forum is expressly designed to catalyze and operationalize partnerships that embed the Sustainable Development Goals across all sectors. The 2030 Agenda affords every actor—public and private enterprises, international organizations, and governments—the opportunity to become genuine agents of sustainable change. Recognizing the indispensable role of diplomacy in this transformation, the second edition of Diplomatic International Day focuses on your country’s and Spain’s Sustainable Development Actions across the three intertwined dimensions of the 2030 Agenda: economic, social, and environmental. Through plenary addresses and thematic panels led by participating ambassadors, the event will explore each dimension in depth. While the proposed subjects serve as a guiding framework, participants are warmly encouraged to suggest additional questions or topics, ensuring the dialogue remains dynamic, inclusive, and attuned to emerging priorities.
